I am frequently asked by friends and relatives "Dave, how to you make your winning horse selections". There are of course a number of ways to find the winners. One good way is to create your own stable of horses and when these plays emerge they become automatic, I like to play these selections at 5-1 or better. Your stable will always be in constant flux as some horses are retired some new charges come into play to take their place. Try to keep tabs on about 20 horses in training and watch the winners fill your pockets with cash. You can even pay a service like Equibase to E-Mail your account when one of your favorites is entered. I like to find them by perusing the PP's myself.
Here is a good example of my first stable play. In 1971, I attended the Maryland State fair at Timonium Race track. That summer it rained constantly and a horse named Bee Bee Bee won 3 straight all on muddy tracks, I had him every time! Flash forward to the 1972 Preakness, the mighty Riva Ridge had just won The Kentucky Derby and was odds on to win the middle jewel of The Triple Crown. Well the clouds opened that day and it poured buckets and who was entered to face The Meadow Farm Stable monster ...Bee Bee Bee. He romped over the sloppy track to the tune of almost 20-1. That ended The Meadow Stables Triple Crown run that they won the following year with Secretariat. So keep a record of these little gems that will keep your bank book in the black.
